Confident Diabetes Management – The toolkit for Nurses in Independent Schools
Course Aim
This interactive course allows colleagues to update their Diabetes management skills, enabling them to play an effective part in the multi-disciplinary team that is required for the successful day-to-day support of students with Diabetes.
The course is led by a School Nurse with 16 years’ experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Young People with Diabetes and a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Paediatric Diabetes currently working in a Paediatric Diabetes Team.
Key learning objectives:
- Understanding Type 1 and 2 Diabetes
- Practical ways to encourage pupils to actively manage insulin delivery, including insulin pump therapy
- Understanding the psycho-social implications for pupils living with Diabetes
- Identifying and effectively managing the short term complications of Diabetes – hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
- The importance of screening to reduce the risk of long term complications
- Effective blood glucose monitoring
- Understanding ‘carbohydrate counting’
- Helping young people manage their Diabetes around alcohol, exams, sport and travel
- Managing Type 2 Diabetes in young people
- Latest research and useful resources
