Tackling Depression and Anxiety- Offering confident, competent and effective support to students
Course Aim
Young people more than ever appear to be facing increasing struggles with their mental health.
With an estimated 1 in 3 adolescents currently struggling with an anxiety disorder by their late teens, a significant proportion of students are in need of expert support. This workshop will aim to build and develop key skills and tools required when dealing with those students who require help, intervention, and guidance.
Key learning objectives include:
- Appropriate response levels for supporting students experiencing distress in the form of depression and (or) anxiety
- Guidance on how to best build rapport and apply key listening skills
- Understanding and assessing triggers, and current risk factors, including the impact of Covid-19
- Managing students’ acute distress – what to do, and what NOT to do, knowing your boundaries and limitations
- Exploring issues of confidentiality, safeguarding and how to set student expectations
- Effective approaches to use for ongoing support and help for depression and anxiety
- Managing disclosure, and thresholds for specialist referrals.
