Effective Approaches for Supporting Students who Self Harm: Building Resilience and Tackling Anxiety
Course Aim
This course aims to equip colleagues with essential introductory knowledge, skills and strategies to support pupils who self harm. The major focus is on significantly increasing understanding of self harm and how to respond, as well as top tips for tackling anxiety and building resilience. Participants will gain skills and techniques for successfully supporting vulnerable students and managing risk. Content is suitable for School Nurses, Pastoral Staff and Senior Leaders who are responsible for the well-being of students within their schools.
Key objectives include:
- Understanding and assessing current risk factors, triggers and current incidence
- Key messages – understanding why
- Exploring how actions are a communication
- Managing disclosure and thresholds for specialist referral
- Exploring issues of confidentiality and conflicts of interest
- Strategies for prevention and intervention within your school
- Developing resilient practice for your staff
- Boundaries – when does it become too much
